Position Summary
The Metal Shop Supervisor leads and coordinates all primary manufacturing activities in a precision metal fabrication environment, ensuring efficient production, strict adherence to safety standards, and delivery of high-quality components. This role manages a team operating CNC machining centers, press brakes, turret presses, welding, and related equipment while driving continuous improvement and maintaining compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and mentor metal shop personnel. Ensure all staff are well trained in their primary job function.
- Assign tasks based on production schedules and skill levels, ensuring balanced workloads.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Production Oversight
- Plan and coordinate material usage for maximum yield and minimal waste.
- Oversee machine setup, tooling, and operation
- Ensure compliance with engineering drawings, setup documentation, and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate production records and coordinate workflow between departments.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce proper use of PPE: safety glasses, shoes, gloves, hearing protection, and hard hats when required.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and ensure compliance with posted safety signage.
- Lead safety audits and participate in monthly safety committee meetings.
Quality Assurance
- Verify all products produced meet quality & engineering requirements.
- Address non-conforming products promptly and implement corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain documentation for quality checks and continuous improvement initiatives.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce scrap, and enhance safety.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize processes and implement lean manufacturing practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years experience, with 3 years in production supervision, preferably in metal fabrication, including CNC machining and press brake operations.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and setup documentation.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and quality control processes.
- Mechanical aptitude and proficiency with precision measurement tools.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, machinery, and metal fabrication processes.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods and lift up-to 50 lbs. occasionally
- Willing to work overtime and Saturday hours as needed
Preferred Skills
- CNC mill programming, turret press setup, press brake setup
- Knowledge of MIG/TIG welding and sheet metal fabrication
